  • Quasi-spherical and polyhedral cellulose nanoparticles can be obtained from agave waste.

  • Microscopy and spectroscopy techniques were useful to evaluate the structure and crystallinity of the nanoparticles.

  • Cellulose nanoparticles have a triclinic structure corresponding to cellulose II.

  • The amorphous and crystalline zones on the nanoparticles are well defined in the HRTEM images.

  • Agave waste has a high potential to obtain green nanomaterials.
